The #1 Rule of Sublimation: It's All About the Fabric

This is the most critical thing to understand. Sublimation has one golden rule:
It works best on polyester fabrics, or fabrics with a high polyester blend.
Why? Because the process is a chemical reaction. The gaseous ink needs synthetic (polyester) fibers to bond with. Think of it like dyeing the fabric from the inside out.

Your Guide to Choosing the Perfect Fabric
So, what does this mean for your project? Let's look at your options.
🥇 The Gold Standard: 100% Polyester
This is the ideal canvas for sublimation. You will get the most vibrant, sharp, and durable results possible.
· Best For: High-performance sportswear (jerseys, running tops), vibrant leggings, and flags. The colors will be breathtaking.
· Feel: Can range from lightweight and silky to more structured athletic mesh.
🥈 The Great Compromise: Polyester Blends (Like 90/10 or 80/20)
A very popular and practical choice! These blends are often used for everyday t-shirts and hoodies. They offer a great balance of color vibrancy and the comfortable, soft feel of cotton.
· Best For: Team shirts, comfy fashion tees, and promotional wear. You get excellent color that lasts, with a softer, more cottony feel.
· What to Expect: Colors will be very vibrant, though maybe not quite as eye-popping as on 100% polyester.
🚫 The "Handle With Care" Option: 50/50 Cotton-Polyester Blends
This is where we need to be careful. A standard 50/50 t-shirt is mostly cotton, which doesn't accept sublimation ink.
· The Result: On a regular 50/50 shirt, the design will be very faded, feel stiff, and will likely wash out.
· The Solution: Look for "Sublimation-Ready" or "Sublimation-Coated" 50/50 shirts. These have a special treatment that allows the ink to bond, giving you a good result with the familiar feel of a classic tee. Always ask your printer if they offer this!
